Dear Families, Staff, and the Helena Community,
How about last Sunday’s game? It’s a great time to be a Seahawk! As we head into this long weekend, I want to share a few exciting updates.
The Board of Trustees met earlier this week and discussed quite a few key items, including the 2026-27 District Calendar. I am pleased to share that it was approved unanimously, and you can find the full calendar in the “Did You Know” section below or on our district website under the “Calendar” tab.
An update I provided to the Board at that meeting, and I want to share with all of you in a bit more detail now, is that back in December, we launched the Grow Your Own Leadership Initiative. This program is designed to identify, support, and develop the next generation of leaders right here in our own community. We encouraged those aspiring to administrative roles or leadership pathways to put their name in the hat.
About a month ago, we held a kickoff event with our first cohort of approximately 20 educators. We were joined by past administrators who shared invaluable experiences and “boots-on-the-ground” type of advice. Going forward, there will be more Leadership Learning Sessions like these with district (past and present) leadership and other guest experts, mentorship opportunities, and leadership experiences such as shadowing. After the completion of orientation and training, cohort individuals will have skills that will help them go for principal/administrator vacancies in the future.
Research consistently shows that internal leadership programs are one of the most effective ways to sustain a healthy school district. Investing in those who already know our students, our culture, and our community’s unique needs helps to ensure smooth transitions. In addition to the administrative track, we are excited to expand this initiative by developing something similar for our para-educators who aspire to be certified teachers. I believe in providing these opportunities because I’ve seen them work firsthand; in fact, my own leadership path started with a program similar to this one.
Have a great long weekend and show some love to those around you!
