Dear Families, Staff, and the Helena Community,
Earlier this week, Principal Brett Zanto informed me of his decision to retire as Principal of Capital High School at the end of the 2025/2026 school year. His final day will be June 30th.
We are excited for Brett to step into retirement and his future life endeavors, and we are grateful for his remarkable service to our district and in public education. His connection to Helena Public Schools runs deep. As a proud graduate of Capital High, Brett’s career started to come full circle when he returned to Helena as a teacher and coach at Capital 22 years ago, a rewarding tenure as an Assistant Principal at Helena High, and then returning to the Westside to lead Capital High as Principal since 2013.
As we move into the process of finding the next leader of Capital High, we know that Brett’s impact will carry on into the future. Congratulations, and thank you, Principal Zanto.
On another note, we have quite a bit going on in the district, per usual. You can find a plethora of information of the ongoings below, and please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions.
Sincerely,

Rex Weltz, Superintendent
Helena Public Schools

01/11-01/17 Recap:
Bonds: The $31.5 million Helena ESD and $130.0 million Helena HSD that were advertised in the Independent Record and on our website, sold within 30 minutes of their offering (in $5,000 increments) through D.A. Davidson on November 20, 2025.
The true interest cost rates on the 2025 Bond issues were favorable at 4.18% and 4.41%, respectively, which are lower than the 4.75% and 4.95% projected rates used for the taxpayer impact estimates at the time of the elections. The savings in interest costs (at 57% of the Bonds having been issued) was about $9.9 million.

This last week, the Mosaic Architecture team held a community engagement event in the Kessler gym to explain where they are at on the project and what is yet to come. However, the engagement part of the meeting was the most important. They gathered input from attendees and collaborated on ideas and concepts that will contribute to the school’s design.
All of our architecture firms have been holding these kinds of meetings, and will continue to do so. Input is crucial to the process, so keep an eye out for upcoming events.
